In response to the Justice Department's investigation into the January 6th insurrection and election-related efforts, Rudy Giuliani, former personal lawyer to Donald Trump, vehemently denied any claims of "flipping" on the former president. As Trump revealed receiving a letter from special counsel Jack Smith, implying a potential indictment, Giuliani's political adviser, Ted Goodman, asserted that no target letter has been received and doesn't expect his client to be charged.
Giuliani took the opportunity to dispel suspicions that he may have cooperated with prosecutors investigating Trump. Goodman stated on Twitter, "Any speculation that Mayor Rudy Giuliani 'flipped' against President Donald Trump is as false as previous lies that America's Mayor was somehow a Russian Agent. To 'flip' on President Trump—as so many in the anti-Trump media are fantasizing over—Mayor Giuliani would've had to commit perjury, because all info he has on this case points to President Trump's innocence."
Giuliani, known for promoting baseless vote fraud claims following Trump's 2020 defeat, has previously spoken to prosecutors under a proffer agreement, which allows him to offer information in exchange for prosecutors not using it against him. The New York Times reported that Giuliani was questioned about the fake elector's scheme and the roles of Trump attorneys John Eastman and Sidney Powell.
In response to Trump's post on Truth Social, where he mentioned being targeted in the investigation and facing a short time frame to report to the Grand Jury, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested political motives behind the special counsel's actions.
Trump himself has already faced two indictments, one in New York over hush money payment schemes and another in the DOJ's case involving classified documents. Additionally, he remains under investigation in Georgia for efforts to overturn Joe Biden's 2020 election win in the state.
Giuliani, too, was informed last year that he is a target in Georgia's probe and testified before a grand jury. The prosecutor, in that case, is expected to make decisions on potential indictments in the coming month.
Furthermore, Michigan's attorney general filed eight felony charges each against the 16 Republicans who posed as fake Trump electors after the 2020 election.
